Avoiding Accidental 9-1-1 Calls
If you accidentally call 9-1-1, do not hang up. Stay on the line and inform the Emergency Communicator that it was a mistake. Hanging up requires dispatchers to call you back, which could delay help for someone in a real emergency.
Most accidental 9-1-1 calls come from cell phones. Many smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, have an Emergency SOS feature that can automatically dial 9-1-1 under certain conditions.
For example, on iPhones, pressing the power button five times quickly or holding both the volume and power buttons can trigger an emergency call. Android devices have similar functions. These features may lead to unintended calls, so it's a good idea to review your phone’s settings to understand how they work.
Tips to Prevent Accidental 9-1-1 Calls:
- Store your phone securely to prevent “pocket dials.” Even if the keypad is locked, a phone in your pocket, purse, or backpack can still dial 9-1-1.
- Do not pre-program 9-1-1 into any phone. It’s an easy number to remember and should only be dialed when needed.
- Be aware that old or inactive phones—even without a SIM card—can still call 9-1-1.
- Supervise phone access, especially with children. Kids playing with a phone can accidentally place emergency calls.
- Teach children about 9-1-1 responsibly. Sometimes, after learning about 9-1-1 in school, kids may be curious and want to "test" it. Ensure they understand it’s for real emergencies only.
