- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use cards or digital payments when possible.
- Travel or shop with a friend—there’s safety in numbers.
- Avoid giving money to panhandlers
- If you choose to give money or feel threatened, avoid opening your wallet or purse
- If you feel unsafe while out, be sure to go to the closest business or public area
- Always carry a cell phone for emergencies. Affordable pay-as-you-go options are available and can be lifesaving
- Never provide personal information over the phone to someone you don't know or completely trust
- Never provide personal information over the Internet (email, social media, websites).
- Be sure to shred any documents that have your personal information on it

Safety Tips for Home
- Be sure to lock your door when you leave and when you arrive home - always use the dead bolt
- If you live in an apartment building or care facility, do not allow someone that you don't recognize or don't know into your building
- If someone tries to follow you into your building, use another entrance, or go back to your vehicle
- Use your door peep hole before opening the door. If you don't recognize the person, do not open the door
- Do not keep large quantities of money in your home
- Keep a record of the expensive items in your home, for example jewelry or electronic
