Child Abuse
Protecting children from abuse and neglect is everyone’s responsibility.
Victims or friends/family of victims are urged to contact the Brantford Police Service, Children's Aid Society of Brant, Child and Family Services of Grand Erie or other community resources if child abuse or neglect is happening. Help is available.
Where does child abuse happen?
Child abuse can occur anywhere—not just at home, but also in schools, sports teams, and organizations. It only takes one brave person to report abuse and protect a child.
Physical and sexual abuse can both be reported by contacting an officer with the Brantford Police Service. Call 519-756-7050 to speak with an officer from the Brantford Police Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) or or reach out to Brantford-Brant Crime Stoppers.
What to do:
- Do not pressure the child for more details—leave questioning to trained investigators
- Ensure the child’s safety by bringing them to a hospital or police station
- Report abuse immediately—certain professionals, including police officers, teachers, coaches, and medical staff, are legally required to do so
- In order to investigate a report of abuse, an officer will need some information such as:
- The child’s first and last name
- The caregiver(s)’ names
- The age of the child
- Home address
- The child’s school
What to Expect from a Police Investigation
- Specialized investigators from the Brantford Police Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) will conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation
- The process can take anywhere from hours to months, depending on evidence collection, medical reports, and witness interviews
Additional Support
- The Brantford Police Service work closely with Child and Family Services of Grand Erie and other child welfare organizations, which can provide support even if no criminal charges are laid.
- Joint investigations may involve community partners and agencies ensuring victims receive counselling and assistance.
If you suspect child abuse, speak up—your report could save a life.
