Low-Speed Vehicles; Not Legal for use in Brantford

The Brantford police are issuing an advisory to businesses and residents of Brantford after receiving multiple inquiries regarding the use of low-speed vehicles within the City of Brantford.  

What is a low-speed vehicle?

A low-speed vehicle is an electric, four-wheeled vehicle that is smaller and lighter than a regular car. Low-speed vehicles have a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour. While low-speed vehicles have similar features to a car (seat belts, a steering wheel, pedals, and speedometer), they have fewer safety features and do not meet the same safety standards.
 

The Province of Ontario launched a 10-year pilot program in 2017, which allows low-speed vehicles that meet certain requirements to be used on roads in Ontario with a maximum speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour. Municipalities must pass by-laws to allow low-speed vehicles on roads. As the City of Brantford currently does not have a bylaw in place, these vehicles are not legal for use within the City of Brantford.

The Brantford Police Service has become aware that some retailers are selling these vehicles to people looking to purchase a mobility scooter. However, they cannot legally be used on roads within the City of Brantford. 

What will happen if stopped by police for using a low-speed vehicle in Brantford?

You could face fines and other penalties if you drive a low-speed vehicle (LSV) where it's not permitted. 

Fines: You could face fines for operating a motor vehicle without insurance, the required equipment, or a permit
By-Law Offences: You could face by-law offences
Criminal Code consequences: You could face serious consequences if you're impaired by drugs or alcohol
Other Consequences: Your vehicle could be towed.
