Brantford Police Service Inspector of Operations Kristen Bell-Samson welcomes attendees to the first evening of class.

April 26, 2024

Class is now in session for an engaged group of community members who are eager to learn more about the day-to-day life of police officers.

Running for four consecutive weeks, the BPS Citizens’ Police Academy is structured as a series of interactive, information-sharing sessions where participants will engage with officers to gain a unique perspective of the policing profession and an understanding of the challenges and responsibilities officers of the Brantford Police Service face each day.

Whether a citizen is considering a career in law enforcement or is simply curious about the daily life of a police officer, the Citizens’ Police Academy is an interesting and informative way to learn about the important role law enforcement plays in creating a vibrant and safe community. There will also be an opportunity for participants to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the Service.

The Brantford Police Service is one of the first services in Ontario to offer this type of community participation through this free, educational program. The Citizens’ Police Academy was first held at BPS in 1999.

The popular program will run each Thursday 6:00 p.m., to 9:00 p.m., for four weeks, starting April 25, 2024, and running to May 16, 2024.

The program covers a wide array of topics, including:
  • Canine Unit
  • Uniform Patrol
  • Police Training
  • Forensic Identification
  • Criminal Investigation – Major Crime
  • Internet Crime and Safety
  • Emergency Response Team
  • Traffic Unit / Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation

As part of annual Police Week celebrations May 12-18, 2024, students will participate in a graduation ceremony on the final evening of the program, where three graduates will be invited to participate in a ride-along with a community patrol officer.

Meet Rookie, Brantford Police Service’s new mascot

Apr 10, 2024

BPS Macsot Rookie with Licoln Roberts

The Brantford Police Service is excited to introduce our newest recruit, Rookie!

A contest was held asking the youth from our community to help us find a great name for our mascot and they did not disappoint. An online survey was launched in December 2024 asking the community to then help select their favourite name from the short list which included suggested names of Blue, Rookie, and Trooper. It was a close race, with nearly 1000 votes cast online.

We would like to thank 10-year-old Lincoln Roberts of Brantford for providing the winning name of Rookie.

Keep an eye out for Rookie, our crime fighting canine friend, who will be out-and-about, making appearances at various local community events.

Apr 10, 2024

The Brantford Police Service was awarded national re-accreditation on March 23, 2024, by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The Brantford Police Service was first accredited in 2004.

Following a multi-year self-assessment phase and a meticulous site-based assessment of community engagement, policy, procedures, equipment and facilities by CALEA assessors, the Brantford Police Service was required to appear before CALEA’s 21-member Board of Commissioners where the commission reviewed all findings and determined the accreditation status.

On Saturday, March 23, the CALEA Commission voted to approve re-accreditation of the Brantford Police Service. CALEA President Marcus Brown and Executive Director W. Craig Hartley, Jr. formally awarded the Brantford Police Service with re-accreditation, signifying excellence in public safety and commitment to community. This is Brantford Police Service’s 7th award of national accreditation.

"Operating under the highest standards in public safety, I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication provided by Brantford Police Service officers and civilian staff. CALEA accreditation demonstrates our continued commitment to providing exceptional service to our community.”
– Chief Rob Davis

In 1979, the Commission was created through the combined efforts of four major law enforcement organizations: the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs’ Association, and the Police Executive Research Forum.

The purpose of CALEA’s Accreditation Programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence.

Public Safety in Partnership with the Community

About CALEA

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement's major executive associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).

Specifically, CALEA’s goals are to: Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities; Formalize essential management procedures; Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices; Improve service delivery; Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and Increase community and staff confidence in the agency.

The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model; once implemented, it presents the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), on a continuing basis, with a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery—regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency.

This accreditation program provides public safety agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards based on industry best practices and approved by an all-volunteer board of commissioners.
