K-9 Unit
PSD Hank & Constable Fisher (L), PSD Mack and Constable Wiacek (R)
The BPS K9 Unit was established in 2014 and has since played a vital role in law enforcement operations. The unit began with two K9 teams: Police Service Dog (PSD) Ranger & Handler Constable Jason Nagy and PSD Scout & Handler Constable Kari Drake.
Over the years, the unit has evolved, welcoming new police service dogs (PSDs) as others retired. In 2018, PSD Finn & Constable Adam Fisher joined the team, replacing a retired PSD Ranger. In 2020, PSD Mack & Constable Paul Wiacek stepped in to replace PSD Scout. Following PSD Finn’s premature retirement in 2022, Constable Fisher was partnered with his second dog, PSD Hank.
Both PSD Hank and PSD Mack originate from Slovakia, where they were selected by our K9 Trainer after being shipped to a U.S. broker. PSD Hank is a German Shepherd / Malinois / Dutch Shepherd mix, while PSD Mack is a German Shepherd.
These highly skilled K9s serve as General Service Dogs, trained in:
✔ Tracking
✔ Building & area searches
✔ Narcotic & firearm detection
✔ Canine apprehension
✔ Evidence & article searches
✔ Obedience & agility work
To maintain peak performance, our handlers and their K9 partners re-certify annually and train weekly alongside teams from the Waterloo Region Police Service K9 Unit and Guelph Police Service K9 Unit.
The BPS K9 Unit remains committed to public safety, using the unique skills of our canine partners to assist in law enforcement operations.
